CDBaby vs The Orchid - 2007/01/30 14:10 CD Baby and the Orchard can be considered as music distributors. They are not records labels and thus have no rights on your music.

It looks like companies like Turmic Records can be considered companies who are after your money. It is beter to directly join up with The Orchard or CD Baby.

Also I found the following information on another forum (http://cdbaby.org/stories/04/06/10/7680665.html)

theorchard.com
+ positives
+ wider GLOBAL digital distribution outlets including european such as MTV, HMV etc
+ LoudEye encoding of files for digital distribution
+ online reporting of digital activity

- Negatives
- higher commission 30% of wholesale for digital and physical cds. vs. cdbaby 9% and flat $4 for physical cds
- bad reputation
- quarterly payment with bad reputation in the past of lost cds etc

positives of cdbaby
+ a lot of great reviews from past artists and great reputation for payment monthly
+ lower commisions as compared to the orchard as above mentioned

- negatives
- distribution channels for digital downloads not as wide and GLOBAL as theorchard
- reported delays in getting on the digital channels. theorchard.com says their artists get on within 6 weeks (how valid is this info. since the digital outlets are the bottleneck from my reading of articles)

One more recommendation. If you are planning to sell more physical CD´s for under a listprice of 13.33 Dollar, it is better to partner up with The ORchad. SInce the Orchad wants 30% of the price of your CD and CDBaby only $4 the break-even point is at 13.33 (4 x 100% / 30%). So if you are selling your CD for a price below the 13.33, say 10 dollar, you will earn 7 dollar with Orchad and 6 dollar with CD baby. But if you sell your cd for 15 dollar, you will earn 10.50 at the Orchad and 11 dollar with CDBaby.

Succes!
